  • PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing), also known as Electrical Equipment Testing (EET), is the process of checking electrical appliances for safety. This includes a formal visual inspection and an instrument-based test to identify faults.

UK electrical safety laws require that all electrical equipment used for commercial purposes is kept in a safe condition. PAT Testing is the industry-standard method to demonstrate this compliance.

  • Faulty equipment can cause electric shock, injury, or property damage. If untested equipment does cause damages, your insurance company may not cover the costs. Under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, any electrical equipment that could cause injury must be maintained safely; avoiding proper checks could cause harm which will lead to prosecution, meaning you or your company could be held fully liable.

Having documented proof of PAT Testing protects you and provides:

    • Documented evidence your equipment is safe

    • Protection from liability

    • Compliance with industry expectations

    • Peace of mind for staff and customers

  • Any electrical equipment used commercially that plugs into a power source should be PAT tested. This includes everyday items and larger appliances, such as:

    • Chargers

    • PCs and monitors

    • Desk fans

    • Power tools

    • Refrigerators & washing machines

    • Kitchen equipment

    • Extension leads & multi-blocks

If it plugs in, it should be tested.
